S.T.E.M refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. More recently, it has been expanded to include Arts, turning the acronym into S.T.E.A.M. But for the purpose of this resource, we’ll be sticking with STEM Education.
A lot of parents know that is important to teach their children these things, but two things often stand as hindrances:
- Some think it’s too early to put their kids on this path.
- A lot of parents are not aware of the resources available.
We’ll be talking about the first hindrance, the “it’s too early” thought, in this digest. In the next edition, we’ll put share some important resources to help you raise wholesome, well-rounded children.
Here’s why you should inspire your little Wissen one in the STEM subject areas:
- It ignites their natural curiosity: Children are naturally inquisitive. STEM education in children capitalizes on those natural scientist tendencies before they fizzle.
- It makes them willing to learn as they get older: When you start with fun, engaging STEM activities from a young age, you won’t have to fight your child to try an experiment or convince her why she should enjoy learning about it.
- It gives them a positive attitude to life: If a child learns to appreciate STEM at an early age, the probability of developing a positive attitude is very high. This positive outlook can help your child stick with the subjects even as they get challenging.
- It builds foundational skills for success: Kids need STEM skills to succeed not only in their schoolwork but also in life. Early STEM education builds a strong foundation for the future, even if your child doesn’t choose a STEM career path.
- It builds their problem solving skills: The problem-solving skills gained from STEM concepts can be applied in any area of life, even if it isn’t STEM-related.
- It provides a potential career path: Primary school is a long way from University, but teaching STEM at an early age plants the seeds for pursuing a career in a related field when your child graduates.
In next week’s digest, we will be sharing some activities and ideas to help keep the S.T.E.M fire burning when your children are home from school. If you want your friends and neighbours to be one of the first set of parents to know when that edition is out, tell them to fill out this form.
